Treatment plants for solid waste


The IUT Group has many years of experience in various technologies on how to treat solid waste. They not only do the design of the plants choosing the best technology available but also operate plants. Due to this experience they not only know how different machines perform during operation but also the quality of after sales services of different suppliers. In addition to that they also consider possible problems which might occur during operation in their next designs.


Depending on the Client’s needs, the existing problem/waste and the anticipated business model and market demands The IUT Group offers custom made solutions using state of the art technology:


Material recovery facilities (MRF)

Facilities are for the recovery of valuable material out of different kinds of waste, mostly Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), Industrial and Commercial Waste (ICW) or Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW). They come in variable throughput sizes and sorting automation levels.

Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) plants

Refuse Derived Fuel is an engineered alternative fuel mostly used by the Cement Industry to subsidize coal or gas. RDF is produced out of mixed solid wastes, and has to meet strict quality criteria. RDF plants are often done in combination with an Material Recovery Facility.


Aerobic digestion of organic waste – composting plants

Compost plants are the traditional way of treating organic wastes by aerobic fermentation. They transform the organics into high quality organic fertilizer.


Anaerobic digestion of organic slurry – ADOS biogas plants

ADOS (Anaerobic Digestion of Organic Slurry) is one of The IUT Group’s own technologies. It converts organic wastes from households or the food industry into biogas, heat and electricity. Although the principle biological system might be similar to agricultural biogas plants the pre-treatment is very different. Especially for ADOS plant The IUT Group not only offers to do the design, procurement and installation but also supports their Clients during operation.

Dry anaerobic digestion – DAD biogas plants

The DAD system was developed out of the above described ADOS system, mainly to offer a cheaper alternative to it. Same as the ADOS system DAD plants convert organic wastes to biogas, heat and electricity but in a lower efficiency. For Clients who focus on being self sustaining or business plans which don’t depend on the sale of electricity this can be a price a less expensive alternative. (download brochure)

Landfill Technology


Not properly managed or closed dump sites and landfills are a ticking time bomb. The generation of Methane gas can cause fires and subsequent toxic gases, and explosions. Further is methane about 25 times more dangerous to the Earth’s ozone layer than CO2. In addition to aquifers may be polluted due to the lack of a proper lining system. Those dumps have to be treated to control hazards to environment and safety.


Often old dump sites which were originally built to be outside a city are now surrounded by new developments. The land occupied by the dump site not only blocks the area for new property or infrastructure – the surrounding areas often suffer from bad odours and toxic gases from fires, increased vermin population and flying waste.


The IUT group offer different solutions for such problems, depending on the nature of the problem, and the anticipated business model:


Landfill remediation

In the sustainable remediation of contaminated sites, only solutions not involving any long-term hazards to humans and the environment are acceptable. Final rehabilitation of an existing problem site has been achieved only once the source of the hazard has been removed.

Drawing on its broad-based portfolio of services, IUT is able to deliver the appropriate solution to the problems set out above including initial investigation and feasibility studies, remediation plans, management of the execution works, and design, procurement and management supervision of treatments plants for the excavated materials.

By using their own Smell-Well-System The IUT Group can remediation in a safe and odour free environment, and have done so in with more than 17.5 Mio cu.m of landfill volume. This makes them the market leader in this technology worldwide.

Landfill closure and de-gassing

In cases of landfills/dump sites which are not immediately within highly populated areas remediation might not be economically feasible. To eliminate the environmental and safety hazards those sites should be properly closed and if necessary de-gassed. Using their wide experiences in this field The IUT Group supports their Clients in conducting closure design and execution supervision, landfill gas studies, de-gassing designs, installations and operation supervision.


Design and construction of new sanitary landfills

The IUT Group offers their Clients design, procurement assistance and installation supervision for the construction of new sanitary landfills. Those include proper bottom liners, leachate collection, operation manuals and future closure designs. Further the can also support Clients by supervising the operation of new and existing landfills.

IUT Technology


During their over 30 years’ experience in the waste management field The IUT Group has developed several technologies for which they could not find alternatives in the market. Those technologies have been tested in the laboratory and proofed themselves in normal operations many times. The IUT Group’s engineers learn from every new project and work continuously on improving the technologies.


For those technologies, The IUT Group acts as machinery supplier:



Before an old landfill can be excavated (e.g. for site reclamation, rehabilitation or repair of leachate pipes), the material buried in the landfill has to be treated. This is where the patent-protected SMELL-WELL System comes in.


This system

  • converts the landfill from anaerobic to aerobic conditions
  • prevents odour formation during excavation work
  • regulates and reduces water flows
  • reduces the amount of methane that is released to the air from the landfill.


The SMELL-WELL System prevents the generation of obnoxious odours by injecting into the waste warm, high-oxygen air that has been enriched with bacteria that promote decomposition.


During the injection the micro-climate inside the landfill changes after as little as one to five days. As the anaerobic environment in the landfill is being converted to aerobic conditions, malodorous emissions disappear. Biofilters deodorise the extracted gases and reduce their pollutant levels.


The SMELL-WELL System is the key factor in landfill reclamation and remediation.

ADOS mill

The ADOS mill, a patented wet mill, reduces the size of organic waste from households and commercial waste generators, and separates it from recyclables and residue waste. The products is a slurry with about 12 – 18% dry substance which is forwarded into the digesting process.


The ADOS mill is the heart of the ADOS biogas plant, and has the capacity to treat approx.. 8-9 m3 of organic waste per hour.

Sedi tank

As additional step to the ADOS mill The IUT Group also developed a sedimentation tank, the so called sedi tank. It comes in two different sizes, and by using a swim-sink technology it prevents sediments from going into the digester. This allows the absence of an agitator system in the digesters and increases the time between two digester cleaning processes. As emptying a digester means loss of valuable gas production and subsequently loss of revenue the sedi tank helps making the ADOS system more efficient.
